What Is Hard Water?
Hard water contains dissolved minerals known as hardness ions, primarily:

The Basics of Ion Exchange
Ion exchange is a process that replaces hardness minerals with sodium or potassium ions. As hard water passes through the resin tank, specially designed resin beads capture calcium and magnesium while releasing sodium or potassium into the water. This exchange removes the minerals responsible for hard water without adding chemicals or changing how the system operates.

The Resin Tank: Where Softening Happens
At the heart of every ion exchange water softener is the resin tank. Inside are thousands of microscopic resin beads that carry a negative electrical charge.
Because opposite electrical charges attract, the resin beads capture the positively charged calcium and magnesium ions found in hard water. As these hardness minerals attach to the resin, sodium or potassium ions are released into the water in their place. This continuous exchange transforms hard water into softened water before it enters the home's plumbing system.
